About the Book
“I am going to give advice. I am going to issue warnings. Advice and warnings about things which are so perennial that no one calls them ‘current affairs.'" —C. S. Lewis, “The Inner Ring"
When we first read C. S. Lewis’s science fiction trilogy, we realized that Lewis writes as if his readers are as well-educated as he is. Lewis alludes to everything from Arthurian legend and Medieval cosmology to H. G. Wells and the World Wars. For us, and surely many other readers, these books raise more questions than answers. Lewis’s more popular works, such as the Chronicles of Narnia, have inspired a wealth of scholarly literature that unlocks the allusions and nuance in Lewis’s writing. However, the Ransom Trilogy remains largely neglected in Lewis scholarship. When we realized this gap, we saw an opportunity. Our goal was to write the book we wished we had when we first approached the Trilogy.
A Compass for Deep Heaven provides the background information, historical context, and literary context that bridges the gap between what readers are expected to know and what they actually know. It does not merely inform; it takes the next step of showing how these contexts clarify the key messages and real-world warnings hidden in Lewis’s fiction.

“I take very seriously the research, the careful collaboration, and the critical thinking that are displayed in each of the essays in this impressive volume. This collection should be read and studied. It marks an important step toward greater understanding of a neglected area of Lewis scholarship."

“I was completely blown away with the quality of their project—the seriousness with which they approached the project, the high level of scholarship they displayed in it, and the quality of their writing. I have recently had the opportunity to review the volume, and I am even more impressed."

“I eagerly await the release of A Compass for Deep Heaven: Navigating the C.S. Lewis Ransom Trilogy. The fact that Inklings expert Diana Pavlac Glyer is the editor of this forthcoming book makes it a must-read, in my view."
